There are no longer any Club Carlson hotels in Atlantic Canada. The Radisson Suites in Halifax is now a Doubletree and the Country Inn & Suites in New Glasgow is a Travelodge. However, if you have any travel plans before October 31 where there is a Club Carlson property, you should take note of this promotion for earning bonus Gold Points. [Read more…]
Advance Booking – Pros and Cons
In a recent post Fernand made a comment about advance booking. In particular, he mentioned the savings associated with booking rail travel in Europe. That’s a great tip where it makes sense to book your rail journey as soon as your dates are fixed or as soon as the advance purchase discount fares become available. Although these are typically non-refundable, the savings are so significant that it’s worth the risk. But the larger question on when is a good time to book a trip is not so simple. I’ll attempt to go through some of the factors involved. [Read more…]
Air Miles Travel Redemptions Beyond Canada
In the quest to find decent redemption options for expiring Dream miles, I did some digging around the Air Miles website to see what opportunities exist. As with the Canadian examples, these redemptions are intended for two travellers. The hotels I chose weren’t necessarily the cheapest but appeared to be a good value based on location and cash rate. [Read more…]
Condor Sale
If you’ve signed up to receive emails from Condor you probably got the one about the sale ending August 7. Airfare sales are often not all they’re cracked up to be but with Condor there are usually some good deals if you can find both an outbound and inbound flight at a low sale price. Condor flies seasonally non-stop from Halifax to Frankfurt and Munich. Although you can book an open-jaw itinerary with certain cities, you can’t with all of them for some reason. Presumably, that means you’ll need to book two one-ways. Click the “Lowest Fare Finder” to see the calendar of prices. Here are a few examples: [Read more…]
Airfare Roundup
Here are a few good fares available at the moment to destinations in North America and Europe. As you know, some fares seem to stick around quite a while and others are gone in an instant. These are sample fares found this afternoon. Some of these airfares are widely available on various dates while others are quite limited. [Read more…]
Choice Privileges Points Discount
Here is another discount on buying hotel points. This can be a great way to save on lodging in Europe. If you have any desire to visit Stockholm (which you should), it’s a good city for using Choice Privileges points to get a nice hotel for a low cost. When my parents and I spent three nights in Stockholm several years ago, we stayed down in the bowels of a boat. It was clean and near a metro stop. Breakfast was included and most importantly, it was within our budget. Scandinavia can be a real challenge to the budget of a frugal traveller and points can be a good way to stretch your dollar. Here are a few examples using this promotion. [Read more…]
Air Miles Online Shopping Promotion
There is a new promo where you get 150 Bonus Air Miles when you make qualifying purchases at 3 or more different retailers through airmilesshops.ca between August 2 and September 12. Qualifying purchases are at least $20 before tax and shipping. Check the terms and conditions before you get shopping. There is also a promotion August 2-8 that offers 5x the miles at a few select stores. Just remember you have to click through to the store’s website from the airmilesshops.ca portal.
Air Miles Travel Redemptions in Canada
If you’re looking to get some value for your Air Miles and you have some flexibility in your travel plans, there are a few options worth considering. The important thing to remember is that availability varies significantly depending on the dates. You may be lucky and find the right combination of flights and hotel quickly but it’s more likely to take some searching. These examples departing Maritime airports are based on two people travelling and include hotel and air options. [Read more…]
Lawtons Air Miles Promo
There are a couple of recurring promotions for earning Air Miles at Sobeys and Lawtons in the Maritimes. The Lawtons one appeared in this week’s flyer: Buy $35 or more of Compliments products, get 95 Air Miles, July 29 – August 4. Here’s the flyer. The Air Miles program has been in the news lately. It’s definitely causing some frustration, especially for those who need to redeem expiring miles. Over the next few days I will try to come up with some possibilities for travel redemptions that result in a reasonable value for your miles.
Types of Tours
My first trip to Europe was a whirlwind tour on a bus. It was pre-internet so we went to a travel agent, looked at the brochures and picked one we liked. Now, with a huge amount of information to peruse online, it’s easier to assess the many tour options. For someone who doesn’t enjoy trip planning or feels more comfortable travelling with a guide, a tour may be the right choice. If you feel like a tour best suits your travel needs, there are certainly many to choose from beyond the large well-known companies. Here’s a rundown of some of the different types of tours available. [Read more…]
