Come From Away, the musical about the passengers stranded in Gander, NL in the wake of 9/11, is an incredible show. Sadly, it was announced recently that its run on Broadway will be coming to an end in a few months. That being the case, I thought I’d compile some info on when and where it’s playing for those interested in seeing it while they can, either in New York or elsewhere.
New York City
The last Broadway performance of Come From Away will take place October 2, 2022 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. The official ticket seller is Telecharge. If you’re looking for a discount, check Broadway Box or Playbill for promo codes. At the moment, there are discounts for performances up to September 25. Both sites send you to Telecharge to complete the sale. Another option would be to take your chances on a same-day ticket from the TKTS booth although buying a discounted ticket online would be more convenient.
London
Winner of Best New Musical in the UK, you can also see the show at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End. Tickets are currently available up to October 15, 2022. You could also try for a discount online or in-person at the TKTS booth in Leicester Square. Sometimes one can find a pretty good dinner + theatre ticket package online as well. Just make sure you’re purchasing from a reputable entity when not buying your tickets direct.
North American Tour
The North American tour of Come From Away will be making its way across Canada as far as Ottawa on the following dates in 2022 and into 2023:
Vancouver Aug. 16-28
Edmonton Aug. 30 – Sept. 4
Calgary Sept. 6-11
Regina Oct. 12-16
Saskatoon Oct. 18-23
Winnipeg Oct. 15-30
Ottawa Dec. 27 – Jan. 8
The musical had played in Toronto until it went on hiatus due to the pandemic. It eventually resumed and then subsequently closed over lingering Covid-related obstacles. There are reports it may return some time in 2024.
Gander and St. John’s
Tickets go on sale on Wednesday, June 15 at 12 pm for Come From Away The Concert as part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Come Home 2022 festivities. It’s a concert version of the musical featuring the Toronto cast.
Gander September 13-15
St. John’s September 19-20
Australia and New Zealand
Come From Away is on tour down under as well. Check the official website for cities and dates.
Apple TV
If you can’t make it to the show in person, or you’ve already seen it and want to relive it, it’s available on Apple TV. Check out the official trailer but I suggest not watching the whole thing if you’re going to be attending a performance. It’s better to go in without too many spoilers, in my opinion.
Thoughts
If you’re on the fence about whether to plan a trip to see the show, I say go for it. I have wonderful memories from seeing it on Broadway with my mother in 2018. I also remember watching Newfoundlanders in the audience proudly waving the provincial flag after the finale. My parents then went to see it in Toronto and according to my mother it was just as good there or possibly even better.
With a negative Covid test no longer required to fly to the US, it’s a little easier to plan a quick trip to the Big Apple. Unfortunately there are currently no non-stop flights available out of Halifax. The lowest one-stop airfares are in the $450 range round-trip which isn’t too bad. Sign up for emails from Air Canada, WestJet, Porter etc. so you’ll receive any promo codes that could possibly save you money.
