Saving For Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge – Part 1 Orlando or Anaheim?

If you’re a fan of Disney or Star Wars, you’ve likely heard about the opening of major new additions in both Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida. Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge will be a new “land” in each park that will put visitors on another planet with highly immersive rides, shops and restaurants. The one in California just opened and the one in Florida opens at the end of August. I’m sure it’ll be very exciting…and very expensive. If it’s something you’d like to experience, the first decision will be – which one should I visit? Disneyland or Walt Disney World? Here are a few things to consider when making your choice. Sobeys and Foodland Blue Friday Air Miles Promotion (May 31, 2019)

Some time last year the Sobeys and Foodland stores in Atlantic Canada started promoting “Blue Friday” in their flyers. Lawtons also does it occasionally as well as IGA in New Brunswick. On one day only several items will have a large Air Miles bonus attached – larger than the regular bonuses typically found in weekly flyers. The next one is this Friday, May 31st. Here are links to flyer webpages for Sobeys and Foodland. A great offer is the “Spend $100, Get 50 Air Miles”. My opinion on Blue Friday is mostly positive but there are a couple of negatives as well. [Read more…]

IHG Point Breaks (June – August 2019)

The IHG Point Break list just came out this afternoon. If you have IHG points this is one of the best ways to maximize their value. Hotels on the list are discounted significantly from their regular point rates. The Point Break list is the main reason I pay attention to the IHG loyalty program. However, it’s always hit or miss whether there will be a hotel on the list that I’d actually like to book. And the best ones run out of availability fast. Here are a few thoughts on the current list and Point Breaks generally. [Read more…]

Unusual Hotel Package Rates – Are They Ever a Good Deal?

If you’ve ever searched hotel booking websites for various chains you’ve likely come across rates that include breakfast or parking. Those rate types are fairly common and straightforward. I’m going to explore the rates that are not so common. These are the ones that I typically ignore because I assume they represent poor value. However, I’ve found a few interesting rates at Maritime hotels that might be worth considering. Take a look and see what you think. [Read more…]

Good Fares Halifax To Europe June 2019

If you’ve got some time to head across the pond next month, here are a few options. I’ve mentioned before that I tend to consider airfares from Halifax to Europe under $800 to be a good deal. I up the ante a bit for flights in July and August. But flying within the next 30 days is in last minute territory and scoring a bargain can be a challenge. I took a look today and here is what I found. [Read more…]

My Approach To Booking Hotels

If you’re an avid deal-seeker you will understand why finding and booking the right hotel is not always easy. Saving money takes effort but I believe it really is worth the time required to get the best value for your travel dollar. Booking hotels with points presents somewhat different challenges so I will leave that topic for another time. Anyway, here’s a breakdown of my considerations when I hunt for the right hotel. Checking Flight Availability When You Don’t Have Enough Air Miles

One of the annoying things about the Air Miles website is that you cannot see flight availability when you do not have enough miles in your account to make the booking. This has been the case since online booking became possible with Air Miles. It’s especially frustrating when you don’t have the base level of miles for the flight, but you do have the miles required if you factor in a promotional discount. Those 15% or 25% discounts appear quite frequently on the “Travel Specials” page. Strangely, there appears to be a way around this. [Read more…]

Do You Need A Few More Choice Points? (30% Discount Till May 27th)

If you bought some Choice Privileges points back on May 15th during the terrific Daily Getaways sale and need a few more, there is currently an opportunity to buy some at a discount. It is not the deep discount of last week but still good if you need a few thousand more to make a redemption. The 30% discount applies to purchases of at least 5000 points which is $38.50 USD plus HST. You can now buy up to 120,000 in a year (up from 50,000). I mentioned a few of the sweet spots in a previous blog post but there are more to be found on the Choice Hotels website if you do a bit of searching. As of today, you can search availability and book with points up to August 29, 2019 (100 days away) and see rate levels up to September 15, 2019.
