IHG Rewards Club just announced its latest global promotion. Although it’s not very exciting, it’s at least straightforward. Members will receive double points on every qualifying stay. It’s certainly worth registering for if you’re going to be staying at an IHG hotel. And if you’re considering options for a getaway here in the bubble, remember to check for Atlantic Canada resident discounts.
Promotion Details
Register online and stay between October 1 and December 15, 2020 to get double the base IHG points. Pre-existing bookings are eligible. Review the terms and conditions for all the info, but ignore the bit about the 10,000 point bonus for holders of the IHG Rewards Club credit card after their first stay. Unfortunately, there is no longer an IHG credit card available in Canada.
Atlantic Canada Resident Discounts
Perhaps this is a good time to revisit some discount rates that aren’t exactly easy to locate.
A normal practice when booking any chain hotel is to check the rates on the chain’s main website. All types of rates are displayed such as member, flexible, prepaid, package, senior or CAA. If you have a corporate rate that you’re eligible to use, you can input that as well and compare all your options.
However, some IHG hotels have special rates you can apparently only access through a booking link on their individual webpages. These rates do not show up on ordinary searches on the main site. Some of the hotels offering special rates also post about them on social media and ask that you phone the hotel directly to make a reservation. In other words, don’t use the general IHG reservations number or website to book.
Here’s what I could find in Nova Scotia:
Atlantic Canada Resident Rate – Save up to 15%
Holiday Inn Sydney – Waterfront
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Halifax – Bedford
Bubble Staycation Rate
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Stellarton – New Glasgow
The staycation rate at this hotel that ended Aug. 31 started at $99 and this offer appears to be the same. There is also a special rate of $89 available to essential workers with work ID.
The “rate preference” displayed is LOCALGETAWAYS for all three and the links above take you to the webpage for each hotel where you can find the discount rate info. I went as far as the payment page to verify that these are points-earning qualifying rates and thus eligible for the double points promotion.
Bottom Line
I’d say IHG’s latest global promotion is middle of the road, but if you’re going to be staying at a Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express or Crowne Plaza this autumn, you should definitely register to get the extra points. As well, be sure to check the website for the specific property or even the hotel’s Facebook page to see if there are any special rates that don’t show up in a regular search.
