Air Canada has dropped the fare to New York’s LaGuardia airport from everywhere in the Maritimes from now into December. Air Canada’s Special Offers page says this is the last day for booking the sale fare. The lowest I found was from Fredericton to New York (LGA) at $307 on some dates but there are many in the $320-$340 range. I see there are similar low fares on WestJet, and on Porter from Moncton and Halifax to Newark. All have connections. The non-stop on United from Halifax to Newark has not matched. The Delta flight to JFK that ends October 1st hasn’t either. But a cheap airfare to New York is just one piece of the puzzle. You also need reasonably priced accommodation and Autumn is a popular time in NYC. However, if you choose your dates carefully, it’s still possible to get a deal. Here’s an example.
November 20-23
These are the 3 nights before US Thanksgiving and hotel rates oddly drop, but just for those 3 nights. This is a great time to see the impressive Christmas displays in the store windows without the crowds. You can also check the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. The hotel rates listed below are refundable – there are typically lower advance purchase rates. I would not recommend booking an advance purchase rate for these dates. If it’s like last year, rates will drop at some hotels until about 3 weeks out. This year might be different but I would wait.
Wyndham New Yorker $95 USD CAA
Fairfield Inn & Suites New York Manhattan/Fifth Avenue $110 USD CAA
Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan $117 USD CAA
DoubleTree by Hilton New York – Times Square South $119 USD CAA
December (before Christmas)
You’ll have to play around with the dates to see if you can score a good combination of low airfare and decent hotel rates. There are some good budget options in the Long Island City area just a few metro stops from Times Square. This area is convenient to LaGuardia airport. One hotel that gets very good reviews is the Sleep Inn Long Island City ($90 USD CAA Dec. 13-16) but there are many others as well.
