There are many keen collectors of points and miles in the Maritimes. However, I suspect lots more people are either casual collectors or pay no attention whatsoever to loyalty programs. Learning how to effectively earn and redeem points is a chore and may not seem like it’s worth the effort. So, I thought I’d attempt to lay out a strategy that might help someone become more active in the points and miles world. The focus will be on Air Miles and PC Optimum as those are the most accessible programs for everyday purchases in Canada. [Read more…]
Why You Should Visit Krakow, Poland Sooner Rather Than Later
If you are pondering potential European travel destinations for a future trip, I suggest you bump Krakow up the list. I’ve held this view after visiting the city in 2016 and subsequently visiting Prague, another great central European city, in 2018. I found the contrast of the two somewhat enlightening and prompted a concern that Krakow will soon turn into the major tourist magnet that Prague has become. [Read more…]
Going to Scotland or England? Consider a National Trust for Canada Membership
There’s a great potential money-saving opportunity for anyone travelling to the UK and planning to visit National Trust sites. I recently learned that membership in the National Trust for Canada is also valid in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Jersey and Australia. [Read more…]
Open-Jaw Non-Stop Flights From Halifax Under $700 (UK and Germany)
Three airlines offer non-stop flights to Europe from Halifax: Air Canada, WestJet and Condor. We might as well remove Air Canada from the list, however, because the grounding of the 737 Max 8 has put the London Heathrow non-stop in limbo with no foreseeable return. This is particularly unfortunate as it was the only flight that wasn’t limited to seasonal service. On the bright side, both WestJet and Condor offer non-stop flights to more than one city. Therefore, I did a bit of searching today to find a couple of reasonably priced non-stop open-jaw itineraries for spring 2020. [Read more…]
Doing Surveys For Points – Worthwhile? (Rewarding Your Opinions and e-Rewards)
I have a love-hate relationship with survey programs. I don’t enjoy answering a long string of boring questions about various brands of products. I also really dislike getting screened out of a survey after I’ve already answered a whole bunch of questions. And yet, I keep doing them because I like earning loyalty points. [Read more…]
Saving For Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge: Part 2 – Disney Tickets
A while back I wrote the first instalment in this series, Part 1: Orlando or Anaheim, where I shared some thoughts about why you might choose one over the other for a Disney trip. Now I’ll move on to the subject of park tickets. Your ticket to the magic doesn’t come cheap. Visiting Walt Disney World or Disneyland is an expensive proposition so any methods you can use to cut the costs are worth examining. [Read more…]
On A Budget? Go To New York City Between January 21 & February 9, 2020
If you want to see the sights and sounds of New York City on the cheap, there’s a way to do it and it’s all about timing. January and February are a relatively slow period for tourism in the Big Apple, presumably in part due to something called winter. Fortunately, you’re Canadian, so the weather shouldn’t be a deterrent. During an upcoming 3 week period there are some great opportunities to cut your costs in half while capitalizing on low hotel rates. [Read more…]
$50 Expedia.ca Coupon Code For Activities
[EXPIRED] As of the time of posting, this coupon code is still working. For activities of at least $120, you will save $50 when you apply the code MYSTERY50 on the Canadian Expedia website. After the code has been used by a certain number of people it will expire, so if you’re reading this after that’s happened, here are a few thoughts on how to capitalize on the next good promo code. [Read more…]
Hotel Hopping At Universal Orlando – Onsite & Offsite
Recently my mother and I returned from a 4 night stay in Orlando, Florida. It was very similar to a trip we took last December and turned out to be just as much fun this time around. As keen collectors of points and miles, this trip was planned with a little more complexity than it otherwise would have been. Several different loyalty currencies were involved and we flew on 2 airlines and stayed at 3 different hotels over the 4 nights. Having now stayed at various hotels in the area, I’d like to try to shed some light on the choices available when selecting accommodation for a Universal trip. [Read more…]
Condor Adds Halifax – Munich (June – September 2020)
This week Condor Airlines announced that it’s bringing back the Halifax – Munich route. Although it’s just once a week, it’s welcome news to any Maritimers looking for more non-stop flight options to Europe. Currently, other non-stops include London Heathrow on Air Canada and London Gatwick, Glasgow and Dublin on WestJet. Last year WestJet’s Halifax – Paris route was suspended due to the 737 Max 8 situation and that issue remains unresolved (although it appears bookable as a non-stop starting mid May). Icelandair removed Halifax from its seasonal schedule for the same reason. [Read more…]
