A few new things on the Air Miles front – a contest, adjustments to a credit card and a great recurring Sobeys deal. Being a points and miles collector means looking out for promotions and watching for changes that can affect your strategy. Here’s a quick glance at each of these.
Mountain of Miles Contest
Enter the airmilesshops.ca Mountain of Miles contest every day where you’ll win a multiplier for bonus miles on online purchases. Most will get 2x but you could get up to 20x. It’s worth a try if you have any purchases coming up. You also get a chance to win one of 20 prizes of 25,000 miles. The contest goes Oct. 1-23.
Air Miles will likely have a good bonus for online shopping around Black Friday or Cyber Monday in late November so if you don’t score a nice bonus with the contest and aren’t in a rush, wait for that one. And if the Shop The Block promotion returns next month there will likely be an online shopping offer as one of the many options.
Amex Air Miles Platinum
Big changes are coming to this credit card. Currently the annual fee is $65 but as of November 4, 2019 it will shoot up to $120. The earn rate is 1 mile per $10 at Air Miles sponsors and eligible drugstores, groceries and gas, and 1 mile per $15 on all other purchases. But after November 4th, you’ll earn 1 mile per $5 spent on eligible food & drink, gas and transit (up to $30,000 per year) and 1 mile per $10 on all other purchases.
Once a year when you redeem Dream miles for a flight or vacation package you’ll get a bonus back in your account equal to 25% of the net amount of miles used (up to 750 max).
So if you’re eyeing this card, you better apply before November 4th while the annual fee is still $65, as the sign-up bonus appears to be remaining at 2000 miles when you spend $1500 in the 90 days after approval.
Sobeys $200 Gift Card
Our old friend is back in the October 3, 2019 Sobeys flyer. Buy $200 in Sobeys gift cards, get 100 Air Miles. Limit of 5 per collector. Remember you can use these at Lawtons Drugs and many Shell stations in the Maritimes. Easy and straightforward. If you have visions of reaching Onyx status, this is a nice way to boost your balance.
Also in the Sobeys flyer is a 10% discount on Air Canada gift cards.
