If you’re itching to fly off somewhere and don’t need beaches and palm trees, here’s a great fare to London, UK. It’s on WestJet which means connecting in Toronto (YYZ) as the seasonal non-stop service to London Gatwick (LGW) from Halifax (YHZ) doesn’t begin until April 26th.
Basic Economy
Note this fare is in the lowest category (basic) which comes with a variety of restrictions. Choosing regular economy will bring it up to $620.
London in Winter?
London is fantastic any time of year. Pack layers and take comfort in knowing that choosing accommodation without AC will not negatively impact your stay. When I’ve visited the UK in winter it never felt too cold to be out and about. As I check the weather at this moment it’s double digits over there.
Any Cheap Lodging?
I checked rates on the Premier Inn website, a well regarded budget hotel chain in the UK. Depending on your dates, it’s possible to get a 6 night stay as low as 500 GBP ($860). There is also a wide variety of apartments to choose from on sites like Airbnb or various holiday rental agencies. Short-term rentals are legal in London.
Sightseeing?
Visiting some of London’s many wonderful free museums is a great indoor activity. Two of my favourites are the Museum of London and the Imperial War Museum. Grab a takeaway lunch at the famed Borough Market. Get some reasonably priced theatre tickets at the TKTS booth in Leicester Square.
Bottom Line
Any return airfare to Europe from Halifax in the $500s is a super deal. If you want to go to London, now’s as good a time as any.
Footnote: the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard has an increased sign-up bonus at the moment – $350 WestJet Dollars instead of the standard $250. The promotion ends January 6th. Perks of the card include free checked bags and an annual companion ticket.

The British Museum is my fav : Rosetta Stone, Egyptian exhibits, even a totem pole from BC. And shows such as Wicked are available at TKTS whereas it isn’t in NYC…
