Sometimes you need to get a little creative to figure out a good flight deal to Europe. A nice thing about WestJet and Condor is the ability to book a one-way flight at a reasonable fare. This allows you to combine separate flights on different airlines into one reasonably priced trip. In contrast, if you look at one-way fares to Europe on Air Canada your search for a deal will hit a dead end very quickly. While checking today I noticed a few great one-way fares in October.
These are best suited to travellers who have some flexibility with their destination and like the idea of flying into one city and out of another. The great thing about an open-jaw itinerary is that no backtracking is required to fly home.
The Outbound
My initial step is to go to Google Flights and search one-way fares out of Halifax to “Europe” as the destination with flexible dates. The lowest fares are these non-stops on WestJet:
Halifax – Dublin
October 6, 10, 11, 13, 17, 18, 20
$220
Halifax – Glasgow
Oct. 6, 13, 16
$354
Halifax – London
Oct. 7, 10, 11, 12, 14, 17, 18, 19, 21
$358
The Inbound
The one-ways on Condor are lowest on flights home. All of them connect though Frankfurt.
Frankfurt – Halifax
Oct. 10, 13
$310
Oct. 17, 20
$240
Oct. 24
$270
There are many cities you can depart from, connecting through Frankfurt, to return to Halifax. To get an accurate sense of the one-way fares from these airports you need to ditch Google Flights. For some reason it won’t show me the real fares on these. It will only show the one-way from Frankfurt correctly.
So, here are some examples from the the Condor Airlines website. There are dates with slightly higher fares as well but I zeroed in on the lowest options which appeared mostly on Oct. 17 and 20. These are in the order of my random non-exhaustive searching:
Berlin/Vienna/Paris – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$320
Nuremberg/Bologna – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$290
Nice – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$310
Krakow – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$300
Ljubljana – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$200
Oct. 24
$230
Amsterdam – Halifax
Oct. 17
$260
Brussels – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$210
Stuttgart/Geneva – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$270
Basel – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$240
Milan – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$280
Zagreb – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$230
Dubrovnik – Halifax
Oct. 17
$240
Florence – Halifax
Oct. 17
$210
Venice – Halifax
Oct. 17
$290
Prague/Zurich – Halifax
Oct. 17, 20
$260
Some Assembly Required
Putting together a trip like this is akin to assembling a puzzle. In addition to the transatlantic fares you need to figure out how to get from one place to another at a decent price. Fortunately, budget flights are widely available in Europe. In addition to Google Flights you can check websites like Skyscanner or Whichbudget for low fare options. Remember that added fees for bags, seat selection etc. will increase the total cost. If you’re headed to the continent from London you can buy a Eurostar train ticket good for transport to Paris, Amsterdam or anywhere in Belgium.
Here are 3 examples:
Halifax – Dublin (WestJet)
Oct. 6
$220
Shannon – Krakow (Ryanair)
Oct. 15
$34
Krakow – Halifax (Condor)
Oct. 20
$300
Total: $554
Halifax – Glasgow (WestJet)
Oct. 6
$354
Edinburgh – Amsterdam (EasyJet)
Oct. 14
$76
Amsterdam – Halifax (Condor)
Oct. 17
$260
Total: $690
Halifax – London (WestJet)
Oct. 7
$358
London – Florence (Vueling)
Oct. 12
$52
Florence – Halifax (Condor)
Oct. 17
$210
Total: $620
Cost Considerations
If your plans are flexible and you’re happy to just grab the lowest airfare, remember to turn your mind to the costs associated with each destination. If hotel rates are high and sightseeing is expensive you might be better off choosing a higher fare destination where you can get lower lodging rates, cheaper dining etc. If you split your trip between places like London and Krakow, the second part of your trip will give your wallet a reprieve from the stress it might have it endured in the first part.
Bottom Line
Flying into Dublin and out of Frankfurt by combining one-way flights is as low as $455 at the moment. It shows why it’s worth messing around with your airfare searches to see if you can piece together a deal with one-way tickets.
